Halloween Costume Party Ideas : Gods and Goddesses

The creativity of the ancient Greeks know no limits for, strangely enough and contrary to what most of us might think, the legend of Greek mythological gods does not start with the all famous father of gods, Zeus\s. In fact, legend has it that Zeus was preceded by a generation of older gods known as the Titans. The Titans in turn were not without a background of their own.

Supposedly, it all started with space (Chaos, then the earth Gaea came out of space.  From the earth came day Hernera and sky Uranus and the sea (Pontus). Then the Cyclopes, creatures with one eye in the middle of their head, cam followed by Titanus. They both represented everything huge and strong.

The god Uranus feared his sons, so he threw them into a chasm after their birth. But his wife Gaea saved their son Cronus (Time) who release his brothers, so the oldest son Titanus ceded his rights to his brother, Cronus on condition that Cronus didn’t bring up his sons and Cronus accepted this condition. His acceptance made him control the world and at the same time, it made him eat his sons. He therefore represented a time that destroyed everything without pity or mercy. But his fifth son, Zeus escaped this destiny and spent his childhood in a cave in Mount Dice in Crete. When he became a man he discharged his father and beat the titans with the help of his brothers Hades and Poseidon. The overthrow of the Titans and the beginning of Zeus’s reign was the beginning of peace and order along with a long line of gods that would enrich Greek mythology forever.

Meet the family

The first to become acquainted on our list are the Olympians, a group of 12 gods who ruled after the overthrow of the Titans. All the Olympians are related in some way, and they are named after their dwelling place mount Olympus.

After Zeus (Roman name Jupiter) beat the Titans he and his brothers Hades and Poseidon divided the universe amongst themselves. Poseidon took the Sea, Hades took the Underworld and Zeus took the sky and the Earth. He became Lord of the Sky, the gods and the thunder. He was also the rain-god and cloud gatherer. Zeus married his sister Hera, the goddess of Marriage, and she became the queen of gods. Zeus was playful so he married many times while he was already married to Hera. He married Demeter, Leto, Maia and Diane. He also married humans and had several sons from these marriages, such as Hercules and Perseus. Zeus was the s was the wonderful system that dominated the universe, so he was the god that all the other gods obeyed completely.

Poseidon (Roman Name Neptune) is the brother of Zeus and had aided him, along with their brother Hades, in overthrowing their father. In dividing their inheritance, he made the sea his empire and place of authority. He became the second in power after Zeus and he was worshipped by most of the sea men.  Poseidon was greedy, so he had a lot of fights with some other gods whose cities and dominions he wanted to overtake. Poseidon lost a contest to Athena for the patronage over Athens, when he showed is power by striking the Acropolis with his three-pronged spear, which caused a spring of salt water to emerge. Athena won the reign over the city by planting an olive tree.
