Halloween Costume Party Ideas:
Homemade Halloween Masks
Milk Jug Halloween Mask-this is fast, easy and
cheap. You will have lots of design options with
this one.
Materials:
Pencils, erasers, practice paper
Gallon milk or water containers, cut in half (handle
side, "smooth" side)
Newspapers, cut into strips (as well as whole
sheets), paper towels
Masking tape, scissors, X-Acto knives
Wheat paste mixed according to directions, buckets
Gesso, Tempera paint, brushes
Procedure:
On practice paper, design the overall concept for
the mask.
Choose a milk container that will best provide the
foundation for the style of mask to be created.
Areas may be built up by taping wadded up newspaper
to the form prior to applying the papier-mâché.
Cut openings in form for eyes and mouth. (Features
can also be painted on, if desired.)
Using strips of newspaper coated with wheat paste
(demonstrate how to remove excess paste), begin
applying to form, making sure that strips wrap over
to back of form.
Apply approximately 3 to 6 layers of newspaper.
Allow drying time between the layers. Try to keep
areas smooth to create an even surface.
After newspaper has been applied and has dried,
apply one layer of paper towel strips to form, again
trying to create a smooth surface. |
