Halloween Safety Tips for Your Kids
Halloween is a time to have fun and to be
creative while keeping in mind that it is
also important to keep your children and
yourself safe during the spookiest night of
the year. Here are some guidelines for
choosing a safe Halloween costume for
your kids. Don't forget the 'other'
kids. Read these safety tips to help your
pet
enjoy his Halloween, too
“Everyone gets excited about Halloween and
costumes, but they don't always think about
safety.” Says Jalem Getz, President of
BuyCostumes.com says. Following some of
these simple guidelines from
BuyCostumes.com
will help keep your kids safe, happy and
healthy while enjoying their costumes and
treats:
-
DON’T TRIP!
Always make sure that the Halloween
costume doesn’t get in the way of your
child’s feet by hemming or cutting the
bottom of the costume, so it is not
dragging on the ground. Always have your
child wear shoes that fit (even if they
don’t go with the costume).
-
I SEE YOU!
Masks are great fun! Just is sure that
if the mask is difficult for your child
to see through, cut their eye-holes
larger. If you cannot cut the mask, make
sure they avoid wearing the mask from
house to house unless they are
supervised by an adult. Makeup is also
another great option.
-
HOT STUFF!
Check the material to see if it is flame
retardant or resistant. Most
commercially produced costumes are
resistant, but it’s always a good idea
to check.
-
HERE I AM!
Be seen, especially at night. Make sure
that if you or your children aren’t
wearing light colors, you take some
precautions. Reflective tape is great
along with light up shoes. A flashlight
may also be another idea, just make sure
it is kept on while walking.
-
SLOW DOWN!
Walk, don’t run. We know that children
want to get as many treats as possible,
but its better to be safe than sorry.
-
GET OFF THE ROAD!
Always stay on the sidewalk, it’s not a
good idea to cut across yards or
driveways. If there aren’t any
sidewalks, walk on the left hand side of
the road facing traffic.
-
STOP & GO!
Always obey traffic signals, if your
child doesn’t know what the traffic
signals mean, then they are too young to
be without an adult.
-
FUN TIME!
Have your child wear a watch, preferably
one that can be read in the dark.
Have a safe and Happy Halloween. Keeping
those important safety tips in mind, Getz
offers some additional safety tips for
parents to make their children have a safe
and Happy Halloween.
A few extra tips:
-
Make sure your child eats dinner before
setting out, they may be hungry and
start to snack on their treats
-
Children should carry quarters or a cell
phone so they can call home.
-
You should know when and where you child
will be and when they will be home.
-
Although suspicious candy is rare,
always look at the candy first to see if
anything looks like it’s been tampered
with.
