About Halloween : The Story of the First Halloween Party

Once upon a time, in  merry olde Ireland, Halloween night was celebrated as a New Year’s Eve harvest celebration. That's  because these ancient country folk delineated  the year as either farming season or hunting season. The farming tasks needed to be completed by the time the weather started getting crisp and cold. To them this particular night was the end of farming season, and the beginning of a new year, where the lands lay dormant during the cold, dark winter. In order to  commemorate the event, the local priests built huge bonfires in the town square.

The peoples of this land also believed that this was the night their dear departed loved ones passed from earth to the spirit world, and as this was New Years Eve, they also honored their ancestors at this time.

As was the tradition, the people put out their home fires when they went to celebrate round the communal fire. It is believed  that this ancient culture wore costumes as a way to ‘blend’ in with the roaming spirits as they celebrated this final night of summer.
